Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Secret Chiefs 3, The Melvins) and his new project SpermChurch released a record carefully assembled from pieces of rehearsals, new special software, improvisations, electronic bass passed through analogue pedals and a healthy dose of madness, the material for which was mainly recorded in 2017-2018.
The album merdeka atau mati was released as a pilot release on the new Riverform Records, also created by the artist himself.
Broken and crystal-clear sound of a drum machine, surrounded by the noises of analog generators, lingering rotations of the oscillator knobs – it would seem that all this has already happened since the time when Aphex Twin was born or even a hundred years before that. At the same time, merdeka atau mati sounds so authentic and completely divorced from the canons of modern experimental electro sound and is listened to in one breath.
The title “medeka atau mati” was a slogan of the Indonesian Revolution of 1945-1949 which essentially translates as “live free or die”.
